- Water contains dissolved salts, which upon evaporation of water form scale on the heat transfer surfaces causing overheating of tubes and eventual failure.

- High total dissolved salts in the boiler will reduce the solubility of some compounds such as carbonates and sulphates of calcium and magnesium causing deposit formation.
